Mandarinebeats Interview 007: The Mould + Otake mix

The Mould, в миру Дмитрий Проскурников - молодой и очень перспективный продюссер из Московской области. Его появление на арене техно музыки тесно связано с именем Proxy, человеком который и открыл для нас сей таллант. С времени первого упоминания имени The Mould, в интервью Прокси для Bunch.TV, до сегодняшнего дня прошло немного времени, но Дима уже имеет виниловый Mad Soldier Takes a Rifle EP на Mako, в процессе релиз с его ремиксом на Attack 1985, чарт на Beatport и микс.


-Как ты познакомился с электронной музыкой?

Началось все, пожалуй, с радио и разных вырезок из миксов, которые назывались что-то вроде "Клубнячок", "Пиратка 3", "Драмуха" и тому подобное. Впринцепе то что слушали все то слушал и я. Где бочка громче тот трек и круче.)

-Ты помнишь первый трек или микс что попался тебе?

Допустим самый первый я не вспомню , но самый запоминающийся.... Был один микс который выделялся по своему звучанию из всего Электро хауса в моем плейлисте. Назывался он Dj Miss - Klub Tunnel 12 Let [All Hits Compressor]. Наверно после него я и полюбил техно и стал следовать именно в этом направлении.

-Отлчается-ли твой вкус сейчас от вкуса что был тогда?

Да, вкусы мои часто менялись. Одно время я слушал Pumping house, Hardcore и Psy trance. Но это было так давно, что почти и неправда. Сейчас для меня это "шаблонные стили", если так можно выразится. Старые друзья это Minimal и Techno, новые это Dubsteр и New Rave.

-Как он развивается, следует он моде или твоим личным чувствам?

Я скажу так, в каждом треке мне нравится эксперимент, то что отличает этот трек от других. Это может быть необычный бит, красивая мелодия, оригинальный синт. Поэтому это, конечно, личные чувства, мода здесь совсем не при чем.

-Под воздействием чего или кого начал писать свои треки? Каков процесс создания? С чего начинаешь в первую очередь и за что берёшься в последнюю? ты держишь в голове определённый идеал трека или всё происходит как получится?

С музыкальным продьюсом меня познакомил мой друг, мы писали вместе, писали много, и назывались Excuser. Треки выкладывали, естественно, на всем известный росисский портал диджеев и музыкантов (я думаю вы поняли о каком сайте идет речь). По забавным причинам через пол года мы были пожизненно забанены - я неправильно оформил название ремикса и могучий администратор обвинил нас в плагиате.=) После этого я стал писать один. У меня нет четкого плана написания трека как, допустим, сначала заняться только барабанными партиями, потом басом, потом пады и т.д. У меня все начианется с 1 патерна на 4 или 8 ударов, в котором я начинаю свой эксперимент над звуками. Тоесть получается 7 секундный луп, который крутится на реплее. Далее я его развиваю и получается то, что вы слышите)

-Почему же всё-таки плесень?=_) Кто выбрал тебе этот никнейм The Mould, или как вышло так что ты его выбрал?

Плесень это что-то необычное, не до конца изученное учеными, так же и моя музыка - не до конца изученная слушателями. Особенно на выбор никнейма повлиял документальный фильм "Плесень".

-Рано или поздо всё в нашем мире имеет свойство раскрывать свои тайны, что ты будешь делать для того чтобы твоя музыка всегда оставалась не до конца изученной, манящей и востребованной.

Я поменяю никнейм. *смеётся* Шучу. Я буду придерживаться двух позиций: я буду стараться делать каждый новый трек не похожим на предыдущий, конечно же придерживаясь рамок своего стиля и совмещать несовместимое, например, електротехно с мощными дрампартиями брейккора.

-Дабы никто не гадал в каком ты стиле работатешь, попытайся дать исчерпывающее описание, так как я считаю комментарий артиста решающим в этом вопросе.

Я на самом деле не очень люблю эти споры на счет направлений в электронной музыке. Мой стиль, наверно, ближе всего к електро техно. Тоесть прямой сухой бит, металлческие синты, рваный бас. Да, пожалуй так и есть.

-Ты учишься на врача, помогает ли тебе это в создании своей музыки? Возможно музыка для тебя это нечто, что ты препарируешь извлекая из неё составляющие и выделяешь нужные моменты которые попадают на твой хирургический стол в виде битов, бассов и синтов с падами?

Оригинальный вопрос. Я как - то не задумывался о связи моей спецальности с моим увлечением) Когда я пишу музыку у меня в голове возникает множество ассоциаций, но что - то связанного с медициной я не припомню. Я думаю если я начну думать в момент написания о хирургических столах и тому подобное я напишу хардкор=)

-Я знаю, что в июне у тебя готовится к релизу ремикс на ATTACK 1985 - Intruder, были ли ещё запросы на ремиксы от других артистов? И разделяешь ли ты мнение Прокси о том, что ремиксы тянут вниз и не развивают артиста?

Как то на майспейс пришло сообщение от Autodidakt, он предлагал сделать ремикс на его следующий сингл, я согласился но не сингл не ремикс пак я еще не получал) Официально я сделал пока что 1 ремикс, и деградации как артист не чувствую) Просто когда у тебя есть ремикс то уже некая доля работы готова и идея трека не твоя.

-Как ты живёшь с лимитированным интернетом? Это же ужас! Предпринимаешь какие-либо попытки к заполучению анлима в твой дом?)

Да, это проблема номер 1 для меня) За какждой загрузкой приходится ходить к другу) Живу в той части района где ни один из местных провайдеров не хочет обслуживать Плесень)

-Чем ты занимался когда ездил на студию к Прокси? Ты приезжал чтобы подписать бумажки или у тебя есть своё время в студии, когда ты можешь занятся написанием треков?

Чтобы добраться до орехово-зуево мне нужно потратить около 3 часов, так что о каком времени может идти речь?) Приезжал познакомится, обсудить все "Маkопланы", подписать контракт. Как-то я спросил, после того как Дима (менеджер лейбла) рассказал про принцып работы Makorecords: "Главное сейчас музона хорошего побольше писать?" на что Женя ответил, - "Главное перекуривать побольше и поднятся в покере в контакте" =)


-Кстати о контракте, что чувствуешь после релиза Mad Soldier Takes a Rifle EP?

MSTR EP - мой дебют)) Я им доволен! Написанием музыки я занимаюсь на так уж долго, и, думаю, этот релиз неплхой результат моей деятельности Допустим. трек The Metro был написан более чем пол года назад, можно сказать один из первых моих достойнейших треков!

-Я слышал два dubstep ремикса которые ты сделал на основе треков от Morocha, и они были совсем не плохи, почему не слышно твоих оригинальных dubstep работ?

Когда я работаю над Дабстеп треком, то, зачастую, в самый разгар работы, в моей голове возникает вопрос, - "а что если... А что если поменять скорость с 140 на 130 и сделать хаус." Вот поэтому дабстеп треки так и не доходят до слушателя.

-В данный момент я слушаю твой микс для подкаста Мако, и, честно говоря, расстроен тем, что некоторые треки сбивают с волны твоих собственных, которых ты представил в миксе довольно много, не лучше ли было сделать микс покороче? Так же в миксе я услышал совершенно свежий трек Rotten Raisins, что можешь сказатьо нём?

Моя музыка мрачноватая с грубыми звуками и басами, я не хотел чтобы весь микс был в неком напряжении. Поэтому я решил сделать его разноплановым. Rotten Raisins трек свежий, я еще над ним работаю, и пока что его судьбу предсказать не могу. Тоесть, выпуститься он на лейбле или нет.

-Твои друзья и родственники знают о твоих успехах? и как к этому относятся?

Конечно, все друзья слушают Mould'a, так же они первыми дают оценку новому треку. Родители, конечно, такую музыку не поймут, я даже не настиваю, но все равно они за меня рады.

-И на последок?

Желаю всем слушать только интересную музыку, не портите свои уши попсой, я как будущий врач говорю, это вредно для здоровья!!! *смеётся*

Mandarinebeats Interview 006: Mensah

Mensah - fast developing, open minded, good sounded, wide spreading and supported by many people artist from Bristol. His first appearance on Dubstep scene is connected with his "Sahara / Not A Shy Gyal" release on Lo Dubs Label in September of 2009. Since this not full year, he is being nominated as "Best new producer" at Dubstepforum\Junodownload awards, sighed on H.E.N.C.H. label, took part in many, was invited to BBC Radio One Extr1 on MistaJam Show as a guest and also he gave a mount of other guestmixes and interviews for different sites, blogs & radio shows. And here is he on Mandarine_Beats again, and on this time he answered on some of my questions according his music. First was his exclusive guestmix, link on which you can see below.


-What's the weather like today in Bristol?

Sun is blazing and the girls look HOT!!!

- You were nominated for "Best new producer" at Dubstepforum\Junodownload awards, what do feel about this?

It was nice to be recognized but this is not why i make music. There was alot of talent in the category so i guess i felt blessed to be included.

-One of your tracks is called "Stapleton Road" and I know it's the most dangerous street in Bristol. Why did you call it so? Maybe something connects you to this street?

Hahaha, It's not as bad as the press portrayed it to be but it's significance is that it's the main road in my area. As a kid thats where we hung out alot of the time and i felt that the tune reminded me of those times. It doe's have it's dark sides to it but it is one of those places that truly feel like home.

-You will play in Moscow 29|05|10, what do you expect from your visit to Russia? Do you know your Saint-Petersburg date? Maybe you'll perform somewhere else in Russia?

Yeah i can't wait for Moscow...unfortunately my visa starts on the 29th so i can't do the St Petersburg gig :-( But next time it will hopefully be a longer stay with more dates.


-What about your future releases? What, when and where will it be released?

I have a tune called 'Pulse 80's' which is out now as part of the H.E.N.C.H. mixtape project and my EP 'Untitled Future Funk' will be out on H.E.N.C.H. 3rd May 2010 so look out for that one. And 2 more 12" on HENCH before the end of the year.

- I've never heard remixes made by you. Why don’t you make it? What do you think about remixes on your tracks?

I have remixes that i have done coming out now. One is a tune called 'Nightmare' by Badness ft Skepta and Lil Nasty which will be out on No Hats No Hoods on the 12th April 2010. The other is a remix of Baby D's 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' which has no release date so keep your eyes peeled. (Both of them you can listen in his guestmix at MistaJam show: MB add) There are a few more I have done that will be coming out this year as well. As far as my tracks being remixed I am in the process of picking artists that i would like to let remix my music.

- What style of music do you concern yourself to mostly?
And how did you come to this style? Was it a long way or just on the spot decision?

I don't think I have one sound....it's varied because I like to keep things fresh and it depends on what mood I'm in at the time. I like melody and so i try to incorporate that into my music.

- How do you see future development of dubstep\fusion\grime\garage music scene? And what do you think about so massive interest to dubstep? Does it hurt the movement or develop?

I don't know really to be honest. I think that the music will go in different directions...it kind of has already. As long as people keep doing new things it will stay strong.

Mandarinebeats Interview 005: Rony and Suzy

Today on my blog, Thomas and Nicolas Giets - two brothers from the west of Belgium. Producing their own music for 10 years now, and having their own techoglitchingdubstepelectronica style based on Indie Rock culture, they are perfoming always LIVE. So as for me they are suck kind of oldschool generation of electronic music makers, whithout whom, modern electronic music will be have such a digital and lifeless face. I think such kind of artist, is somewhat foundation of modern electronic music scene, while newcomers (not all, but those who really faithful to their deal) are fast running locomotive of developing.

I try to make this interview a little bit more interesting, because music of Rony & Suzy is very experimental and unusual, and speaks for itself and that's why my role in this interview is very little, and here is only musicians speech.

Please welcome! Rony & Suzy talking about their childhood and involving in electronic dance music, their style and thir music, their "Others Are Us EP" and poster for this release, future plans and many more.



Our passion for music started with the Indie scene: Pixies, Sonic Youth, Nick Cave, Crass, Einstürzende Neubauten, Slint, Nirvana, Codeine and much more…It was really an exciting time! Our parents and our sister listened a lot to music at home. We were always on discovery, recording innumerable tapes and we loved to discuss about all these bands, their attitudes and the incredible sound they made. A little later we discovered the techno/house scene which made the nights even longer and more mysterious. New sounds, new morals, different acting and being!! The mix of the two cultures brought us to enjoy « extremer » forms of electronic music. Artists like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Otto von Schirach, Animals on Wheels, Unit Moebius, Bisk,... have carried us to other dimensions…

At the very beginning we made music seperately. Thomas distorted his guitar with friends while I played the drums with others. Once in a while we got together to try out new stuff. With our own instruments, an old Casio Keyboard, an old recorder, a microphone… When we discovered the techno music one thing came clear : We had to save money for a Computer and a Synthesizer. That’s how everything began. Bit by bit new machines joined. The instruments and machines have always influenced our music(style) a lot : acoustic instruments, midi, analogue/digital, hardware/software,….

We perform since more or less 10 years and we have never played DJ Sets. We would certainly have fun doing it : We could pack in it all different styles of music and observe how it is received by the audience…But you don’t become that easily DJ and the time we would need to invest in we would loose for our own muic. For us it is more important to research and to puzzle out our own sounds, rythms and emotions.

Every aspect of life influences us and as you have already noticed, we have a bunch of different influences. It’s impossible to count them all. And amongst them we don’t count just music. We are flowed through with influences and we nourish from that. Additionally comes the medium. We wouldn’t get to the same result if we would play with guitars, drums and tomato tins or if we would work together with a rapper on the newest version of a known sequencer software. That goes without saying! Even if nowadays you can copy a lot. As well even if you are able to mix everything or to link one with another. It is simply not the same feeling.

At the moment we are very much dancefloor orientated. We just love to watch the people move on our music. It brings us much joy. And we enjoy a lot to create danceable music, less with the head and more with the heart and emotions. It can also go to many directions. But that’s rather not us deciding about. Right now we feel that we are influenced a lot by reggae and dub and that’s fine like that as long as we enjoy it. If tomorrow we would be more involved with techno or ambient it wouldn’t be a crime either, would it ? But we are lacking of time!! It is actually one of the most important aspects of our creative process.



We are very glad!! incredible glad about our new 12"! Finally we have the possibility to release our own record. It is something conrete, tangible, tactual. Of course, with a little more distance we would have changed a few things on the tracks. But with distance everything is easier…. We are very grateful to Quentin and Christophe from the label « lamadameaveclechien » for this project!

That’s difficult to tell how long we had been working on it. The ideas were there a long time. That’s why the beginning went very fast, as usual. But then comes the setup, the structur and the subtleties and it takes terrible much time until we are satisfied with our work. We do exchange a lot too! Many sounds and rythms are worked on by each of us seperatly till we eventually can say : “ that’s exactly it ! “ . We often put songs aside for some time so that they can mature and we can take some distance. It is quiet crazy how much time and effort we invest in it. We think that some of our friends don’t really understand it.

As mentioned, it was very important for us that our music gets released on something tangible, concrete like vinyl. It was as well supposed to be useful for DJs. Many of them are using software too. Maybe we are already too old, too conservative or oldschool…no idea! On the one hand music in the internet is something really great : since we are surfing in the net we discovered hundreds of musicians. Otherwise we would never have been able to do that so fast. But on the other side it looks like excessive consumption. To how many percent of what we downloaded are we still listening? How many do we remember? What did the artists receive of it?



About poster we can say that it is engravings. They originate from Cheryll’s thesis during her art studies. The topic of her thesis was «personal impressions of Brussels». They are part of a complete collection and we chose them. They apealed to us. It was simply a feeling. They were a perfect match to the music, to the atmosphere and to the title of the record. But they leave as well space for interpretation. That’s what we like most. She made as well an engraving under the influence of our music but we had already made our choice.

We don’t have plans. We just want to continue making music and to have fun doing it. But one thing is certain : We want to have more often live performances and if we have the possibility we want to continue releasing our music. But not an album. Right now we are not interested in it.

We have tried already once to make a track with lyrics in a while and are still trying. We enjoy trying but till now the result was never satisfying. We love the human voice. It brings warmth and humanity in the music style which sometimes seems to be a little cold. Oh I forgot ! We have once made a remix of a song with rap. We hope very much that it will be published one day. We are crazy about it ! The voice found its role in the song but we guess the lyric have lost much of their meaning. We have « abused », well, changed it so much so that it is more used as sound and not anymore as comprehensible language.

Mandarinebeats Interview 004: RQM

Hello all! Today one more interview made by me. RQM - Polish New Yorker, living now in Germany, and having two yers of life change period in Spain, tell us about himself, his tastes in music and some plans for future. And if you're into Electronic music, then knowingly or not, you've at some point heard RQM's mellow voice and twisted imagery. In the past his vocals landed on productions of Jahcoozi, Stereotyp, Milanese, Lazer Sword, Oliver $ and Mochipet. Sinden, Kissey Sellout and Maryanne Hobbs of BBC1 Radio have all played his tunes, while the latter has even asked him to record the intro teaser to her cult show. Over 30 features and counting, shows alongside the likes of Missy Elliot, M.I.A., Buraka Som Sistema, The Stereo Mcs, The Rapture and Kool Keith and RQM is finally reclaiming his space as a solo artist.



His latest work "COLORS FADE" is an EP about the implicit self destruction of two people in love pushing themselves to the limit. The release was kicked off in Berlin where French street artist REMED painted the story of the life span of a relationship on 84 7" records of COLORS FADE, which include the SIRIUSMO produced ATOMIC FUSION and the CHRIS DE LUCA remix of COLORS FADE. These analog jigsaw puzzle pieces are now up for sale in a package that not only includes an extract of REMED's work, but also the 7" and a CARHARTT tshirt designed by REMED. And here are his words: "I wanted to give something of value to my fans. I figured since everyone is trying to make an extra buck by squeezing their fan base and using the whole limited edition thing more as marketing tool - i'll do just the opposite. What my people will get is affordable art."

One more intresting fack about Colors Fade Ep. The lyrics to the song ATOMIC FUSION produced by Berlin's wunderkind - MODESELEKTOR, affiliate SIRIUSMO liken the love of two people to a NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST. The intensity of their combined chemistry predetermines their inevitable destruction - described here as a brilliant self-annihilating flash. A disturbing factoid about the song: when played to archival footage of nuclear tests - the music syncs perfectly with the movement of the mushroom clouds and the unfolding of the outer rings of the explosion - this is something that neither SIRIUSMO or RQM knew when penning the song.



-Hello, let's start from the most favorite question in Russia - How are you? What are you doing now, tell us everything without any limits.

And i thought, that was an American thing. I'm good, thanks.

-How long are you in music production? From what did you begin?
How did you begin to take part in projects of so different style - from minimal techno to grime? I think, for sure, it was a long way from a local MC to an international musician, can you tell us some words about this period, period of a rising star? What styles are most interesting to work with for you?

I was into music since i was a kid, that and writing as well. In high school i already started my first bands and we played NYC hardcore and hardcore hip-hop crossover music. Eventually i discovered Drum & Bass and it was like an alien art form to me, and it sort of made me think of futuristic hip hop and from that point on the portal to all things electronic was open. And of course i had to go through all the training levels so i hit up all the open mics, i hosted D&B parties, i went to cyphers and eventually when i moved from NYC to Berlin, i got to record with some of the best in the game and from that point on it was all falling like dominos. But even back in new New York, i was handed a good hand of cards - one of the very first shows that i got to play was with a project called "Terceira coalition" and we opened up for "Gus Gus" and the "X-cutioners".


-Have you got any musical education? If yes, where did you get it?

Formally no. A small marshall amplifier, an electric guitar and a dream to be up there with some of the metal greats - that was drive and my only schooling.

-What are you listening to in your free time? What music did you listen to when you were growing up? What is your standard for music - a perfect track or a compilation.

I love music to the core, so i listen to almost all genres and depending on my mood one of them will dominate the playlist. I still bump a lot of hip hop and some NYC Hardcore and Punk - i grew up on that and i still love the energy. There is a lot of electronica in the mix of course, but recently i have been listening to a lot of African music - artists such as Mulatu Astatke, Hugh Masakela etc. And i'm really loving the vibe on the new Gil Scott-Heron record.

-What are you working on now? What are your plans for the nearest or distant future? Maybe an album, are you already working on it?) What do you think about collaboration with another MC's? How do you choose your partners?

At the moment i'm caught up in all this record label bullshit - mostly office work. While launching "Baby Sumo" i didn't know that it would be so time consuming. But yesterday, during a break i recorded a strange folk ballad with Sasha Perera from Jahcoozi and next week i'll be meeting up with Chris de Luca from clp and hopefully he'll have some good beats for me, because i'm starving and my life is too square at the moment. And as far as collaborations with other MC's go - i m not so big on doing them. When you have more than one MC on a track, it throws the whole thing into the standard hip hop song structure and i find that too limiting. But having said that i recently recorded with Simbad and he put me on a beat with this French brother of mine The Grems and i really enjoyed that session.

-What have you heard about Russia? Do you know any MC from Russia? Do you want to collaborate with a Russian musician\mc?

My parents lived in Moscow for a bit and i'm polish by birthright, so the culture is quite close to me. In the 90s when i went to visit my parents i remember seeing some Russian hip hop on TV, but like everywhere in the world the first rappers are always playing the gangster card and most of them are not that good. As far as what's going on right now in Russian hip hop - i don t know - the language barrier keeps national music local most of the time. Occasionally i stumble upon Techno producers and Dj's from around your way - good stuff. But i think in this hybrid left field hip hop sector Dj Vadim is probably the most known Russian cat.

-What do you prefer most in your tracks; technique of flow or meaning of your text (maybe sense pressure, i do not know how to say it in English) Have you got tracks in Spanish? Why are there no releases in your native language?

Like i said i'm a polish new yorker and i'm currently living in berlin. I took a break from everything and settled in Barcelona for 2 years to relaunch my career on a solo tip so no Spanish tunes per se. Tracks in polish - i would love to have at least one on the full length record, but i don t know if i can get my language skills to a level up to par with the cats doing it locally in Poland and i can't drop anything less. As far as what i like about my tunes - i think i m satisfied when the production, the song writing, the lyrics all fuse together seamlessly to transport the mood that i'm in.


-Do you produce your own beats or always works with pro in this sphere? Are your texts made by you? How does your text writing look like? Are you writing text on a piece of paper, papyrus, on a laptop or on something else? Have you got any special textbook for them? What inspires you?

At this point i don't make beats, there are far better producers around me. And i'm hella picky with the choice of beats because i only write to them if i feel them. If the producer is really sharp one out of five of his productions will hit me on the average. Usually i make notes and that's an ongoing process, but i write only to beats. And if an instrumental gives me a strong feeling then i kid you not the songs write themselves - i m just there pushing the pen.

-Your latest work was "Colors Fade EP". What can you tell us about it? As for me, this is your best work. Some big musicians were involved in it.

Thank you. It's the closest release to my bones so far. It's honest and it marks a beginning of a new chapter. Lets see what happens - it would be nice to make a buzz big enough to drop a record at the end of this year.

-Do you take care of your voice? Had you got problems with it?

When i used to smoke, i had problems with breath control at shows and at recording sessions. Now i only smoke occasionally and i also pack less syllables per beat so i'm ok. And i also learned not to yell so much at shows - big step. Adrenalin is a hard element to tame.

-Do you drink Russian vodka? And, did you know that the sound of engine of the Russian car - Gas 2100 "Volga", (one of the most popular cars in Russia) can be used as a beat for tracks?!

Plenty of it! ya ll knocked out practically all other brands off the shelf. finding polish vodka in spain wass really a mission..good work ..ha ha.. And hell yeah i could image some analog Volga percussion in the mix for sure!

Mandarinebeats Interview 003: Studio Rockers

Heelloo to all my readers, I'm came back from my looong holidays and have some tasty things for you!!))) At first here is new interview for my blog with owner of "Studio Rockers" label from England. On this label have releases such a good musicmakers as Surje, Decyfer, Hackman, Cotti, Evs, JazZstePpa, The Widdler, Caper, The Moody Boyz, Eskmo, Bionics, Ans and releases from MRK1, Pempi and Rush are coming. Here, Tony Thorpe tells us about his plans for future, and about his label, so let it begin!)
And the second post will be with good mix from Roby Howler, russian Jacking\Fidget\Midget\Tech house fellow, whom has tracks released at "Crux Da House" Label.... Also in plans exclusive mixes from Crispo and The Other Side, both russian musicians, about whom i'll tell you in future.... -Why did you started to releasing music?.

I’d been thinking about starting a label for a while and then the whole dubstep sound really started coming into it’s own and I thought it’d be a good time to put our sound across before the scene got too diluted.

-How do you choose your artists? What do they need to be released? Do they sent for you mastered and ready to release music, or "green" tracks which need to be mastered or remastered? Was there a situation were an artist send for you very very bad qality track, but with something very fresh and intresting, and you finish it at the studio by yourself?

I spend a lot of time on myspace checking out what’s there because these days there are so many talented young producers out there promoting their own music that wouldn’t necessarily be sending their demos out to labels but a lot of them are making some really heavy sounds. Nearly all demos will be unmastered but we would expect producers to have a certain level of competence with mixing down their own tracks. If we received something that was creatively mind-blowing we might make an exception but that is extremely rare and generally we expect producers to have their mixes up to a certain standard before we would release with them.

-How do your studio looks like? What stuff does it have? Do you have parties there, or only use it for work?

My studio looks quite chaotic at the moment with some new bits of equipment lying around that I'm planning to use in the near future. But there is some organisation amongst the mess! There's lots of different stuff in here but mainly synths and midi keyboards. I never have parties in my studio, it's purely for work.

-At your myspace in "Artist" section there are MRK1, Pempi and Rush but they have not got solo releases on label, when would they released?

That's true, well spotted! These artists had tracks that featured on our recent compilation album 'Studio Rockers @ The Controls'. But we do have plenty of releases lined up for 2010 so you can expect to hear more from these artists this year. The next release we have scheduled on the label is MRK1's single and that should be coming out next month so look out for that one!

-Why there is so much time between Anx's releases? He was the first who have a release on your label, now his release is 11th,
can we expect that 21st release will be his too?)

It's just the way it worked out really. When we started out we had so much material from so many different artists that we didn't get a chance to release a next single from anybody. But now it just felt like the right time to come with a 2nd release from Ans, so who knows maybe his next one will be the 21st release, that could be the pattern!!!

-Have you got any requirments from Russian produccers? Maybe you heard some of Russian music produccers? What do you hear about dubstep movement in Russia?

We haven't actually had too many demos from Russian producers as of yet but we'd welcome any that come our way. Russian producers are definitely making some good stuff right now, especially in drum n bass where hospital records have been pushing some of the russian dnb producers like Subwave and Electrosoul System.

-Does the pirates hurts you? Free music shareing is good or bad in your opinion? How much do you envy from your solds?

Yes, free file sharing of our music definitely hurts us. There's plenty of good music available for free that's legal and the cost of music has come down so much in recent years that there's no need to share & download music that isn't free. People have to respect the value of music and realise that they are only damaging the artists and labels that they love by not paying for it. We are a small independent dubstep label and we rely solely on the revenue from our record sales to stay alive, so when people are downloading or "sharing" our music for free then it really damages our hopes of continuing as a label. Recently our album was available to download for free before it had even been released, and the people uploading our releases and sharing them for free claim to be fans!!

-Are you intrested in dubstep tendences in the world, or your label has it's own music style way?

We are always interested to hear what other labels and artists are up to but try not to follow what others are doing. In the end we try and have our own style and we hope that we can take our label and it's sound in a unique direction.

-Do you have special equivalents for music, or there are no borders for music style of your label? And what music you wont be release in any way?

No not really, we appreciate anything that is creative and original and pushes musical boundaries but we are essentially a dubstep label so whatever we release won't stray too far from that sound. But you may see us deviate from this style in the future if the right music comes our way, but it might have to be something truly original.

-Vinyl, CD or digital releases? What do you prefer? And what prefer your buyers?

We will always prefer vinyl to CD's and MP3's. The music sounds better cut to vinyl than it does in it's digital formats and there will always be something more enjoyable about owning the record than there ever will be about having just another MP3 in your itunes folder! If people bought more records and we could survive that way, we'd happily release vinyl only but these days at lot of dj's have made the switch to digital, I think it's a real shame!

-Your first label compilation is released now, what do you feel? I heard there was a party dedicated to it, how it was? Do you plan to make it regulary, or it will be random releases?

It feels good to have put an album out, we obviously put out quite a few singles first but there are already plans to put out some more albums in the future so watch this space. We did have a couple of launch parties for the album which went really well and hopefully there'll be a few more regular Studio Rockers parties in 2010.

-What are your plans for future?

The plan for the future is just to keep on doing what we're doing really. Hopefully we can build on the success of the album and release some more quality singles and hopefully some more albums too. We'd also like to get some regular parties going for all of the fans of Studio Rockers who want to see the artists out there playing their records. And who knows, maybe a Russian release or even a Studio Rockers party in Russia!!!

-What can tou advice for newcomers in dubstep production?
Can you wish something for your listerners and for readers of this interview?

My advise would be to keep it original, don't try and follow what other producers are doing. Just because they are successful it doesn't mean that you will be. Try and produce your own style and keep your own identity and stick with it, you may not find your style overnight! I wish all of our listeners a massively happy 2010 and hope that you all keep checking what we do!

Mandarinebeats Interview 002: Hektagon

Hektagon's tracks were the first I had listen in Dubstep, it was a track "Hektagon - Strange voices" and from his tracks and tracks of Kromestar and Cluekid i opened for myself a beautifull world of Dubstep music! And now, since one year and a half, i have an honor to ask some questions to Hektagon. That is great, i think!)



-Let's start from a simple and very popular question in Russia, How are you? What are you doing now? Tell everything, without limits.

I am doing very well thanks. Right now I am working on a few remixes and on a second album.

-Your album is released, what do you feel? How long have you been working on it? What were the difficulties? What did you worry about most of all, or maybe still worrying? Why did you call it “London”? What is the best\the worst track on this album from your point of view? Does your mother like it?

I think is great that I have managed to write a whole album I feel very proud. I have worked on the album for 6 months solid. The pre-mastering of the album was very draining I have worked 17 hours days at Vin100 studio to make it sound right. I have worried on how will the album be received by the listeners. I called it London because I wanted to reflect what this city makes me feel musically. I love every single track on the album; each one of them has a story to tell. She loves it.

-And now let’s start from the beginning of your career. I know you started to make music in Northen Spain, why did you start with Hip-Hop? And who supported you that time? Maybe any of your relatives?

I just loved Hip-hop, it was so cool back then, and I felt I was always learning and hearing fresh things. All my friends but it was just the beginning.

-How did you progress from hip-hop maker into dubstep?

Well I started to experiment more and more with hip-hop using slowed down sounds and samples which were not heard in hip-hop tunes before, and one day I accidentally heard a track by Nookie called the sound of music on tv and it blew me away. Then I started producing D&B for 6 years and met a lot of other musicians along the way, while studying sound engineering and music tech, that open my mind to other sounds. It feel very natural to produce dubstep, however I make many different styles of music I don’t like to restrict my self.

-Is your music style depends from the place where you live in?

Yes definitely.

-You have not so many your own solo releases, and now album is ready, why? Some people are waiting for years to make their own album. Don’t you think it is "green" or you do not want to waste your time, and an album for you only one step for anything bigger and greater?

Well I have had a few releases already and I have been making music for over 12 years so yeah I think I was ready, I have many other unreleased albums I have made through the years. The label though it will make more sense to have an album out instead of a collection of singles, so people can really appreciate my sound.

-What stuff do you use for your production? Have you got a special algorythm for your production? What can you advise for the begginers in dubstep production? What is the first thing they need to know in they work?

My brain and a few plugins. No I don’t have a special method I just go with the flow and try something different every time I write a song. I will say to beginners in Dubstep production listen to what is out there and what people are producing at the moment and do the complete opposite, the scene will only grow by people trying different things out, not by copying each other.

-Collaboration with what people was the most interesting for you? Whit whom do you wan to collaborate in future?

I haven’t though of that yet, I will say I would like to collaborate with people that have got a completely different approach to music making so I can learn more things.

-What is the ideal party for you? Describe it...

The ideal party for me is the one in which each tune the dj plays sounds very different and interesting. Also the best nights are the ones in which when you leave the venue you can still remember some of the tracks and think to your self that was awesome.

-Do you know something about Russia? Maybe you have heard someone from Russian music producers? Would you like to visit Russia for party or an excursion?

Yes I do but I have never been to Russia. I have heard of producers such as DJ Vadim.
Sure, I would love to visit Russia. Actually one of me and Vin100 tracks called Perpetual got released on an ORB compilation Cd called Tundra and Sunflakes which was released on Russian label called Ketama. I might be coming over to Russia to Dj around Feb-March 2010.

-If you can change something in your life, what would it be?

Hmm, that is a difficult question; I will say I would not change anything since you never know what the future might bring.

Today i have a little exclusive for you, my readers. Here is a Kromestar interview specially for my blog. Here in interview, he tells us about his impression abou his album, the begging of his career and about some more interesting things. Welcome!

-First of all, how are you and what are you doing now?

Kromestar: "I'm cool! I'm here at F-One's studio smoking and drinking tea you know how we do."

-Can you tell me who is Kromestar? And what does it mean (Kromestar)?

Kromestar: "Kromestar is a Dubstep producer - half human, half machine. I thought this was a music interview not a job interview... lol..."

-How did you start to make your own music? When?

Kromestar: "I have got a mad passion for sound from a young age, then i got hold of fruity loops and it was a wrap. It started from there really. I started making music in 97 producing Hip-Hop."

-Was it successful start or something went wrong?

Kromestar: "It is kicked off in 2004 when i making grime for "Sweetbeetz" under my Ironsoul alias."

-Now you have a great experience in music production. Which works do you consider the best and which the worst?

Kromestar: "I would not say there is the worst. I try my best in everything i do, whether i make Dubstep, Grime or Hip-Hop."

-What can you say about your collaboration with F-One, Hatcha, Cessman, Cotti, Walsh and Virus Syndicate? Was it good experience for you?

Kromestar: "It was a good experience doing a track with Virus Syndicate, because i have never had vocals on my Dubstep tracks but they hurt up the dub. F-one is my family, i work with him every week. I also produced a compilation with Hatcha called "Brothers Grimm", that was an experience still... lol... Walsh's my dawg. That collaboration was live, that's it really!"

-With whom do you want to collaborate in the future?

Kromestar: "Dj Premier, Dr Dre and Pharrell Williams."

-Under what do you working now?

Kromestar: "I am working on a few experimental beats at the moment. Getting in my own zone."

-Have you got your own algorithm for making tracks? Or it differs from time to time? What stuff do you use?

Kromestar: "Yeah it starts different all the time. I just start with a sound that is new to my ears. I use Fruity Loops or Logic 8 Pro at F-ones studio."

-Do you want to try yourself in other styles of music, like Trance or Rock for example?

Kromestar: "I would like to make Trance or Rock. That is like a whole new level and frequencies."

-Your album, what do you feel about it?

Kromestar: "I think it was a good outcome. It had different moods on it."

-What did you feel while making it?

Kromestar: "To be honest, i write that album while i was going through mad domestics with people and family in my life."

-What were you inspirited by?

Kromestar: "My family."

-Have you got some funny stories about releasing or making your album?

Kromestar: "Not really, it was a serious time."

-Is it successful for you or you want something to change?

Kromestar: "Yeah, it was a successful project, i enjoyed making it."

-Do your parents like it?

Kromestar: "I do not live with my parents, but i gave my mum a copy still and she said it was nice... Something to drive to."

-What is your favorite track? (Not from your production)

Kromestar: ""Curzed - Dangerous" - that track does it in a dance. I also like "Breakman feat. Newham Generals - Just know that" - big tune!"

-What does your usual day like? What do you listen while chilling?

Kromestar: "Chilling at my house, burning the herb or going to check F-one in the studio and getting on the grind. When I'm chilling i listen to the Game, Mobb Deep, Raekwon, Gangstarr and N.E.R.D - their sick."

-What is your hobby?

Kromestar: "Smoking Chronic."

-And what do you think about music? Is it your hobby, work, or style of life? How has your attitude to music been changing through life?

Kromestar: "I make music for a living. It's what i do for work and a living. I have learnt to appreciate a lot of different genres and styles of music. For me it's about learning."

-Do you now something about Russia and Russian Dubstep movement?

Kromestar: "I have heard Russia is live, but i ain't touched there yet still."

-Do you want to visit Russia for a party or an excursion?

Kromestar: "I would like to visit Russia, whether i play or just visit. Seems like a cool place."
